PARTICIPACIÓN Y ABSTENCIÓN DE LOS JÓVENES EN LAS ELECCIONES AL PARLAMENTO EUROPEO DE 2009 : UNA RESPUESTA DESDE LA EDUCACIÓN CÍVICO-POLÍTICA

Resumen

La participación electoral en general y en las elecciones al Parlamento Europeo (PE) en particular es escasa. Esta situación responde a un fenómeno más general de desencanto respecto a la democracia y sus instituciones que afecta de modo sustancial a los jóvenes. Ante esta situación, en septiembre de 2008 nos planteamos indagar sobre la participación de los universitarios en las elecciones al PE que se iban a celebrar en junio de 2009. El estudio se diseñó en tres fases en las que se aplicaron distintos cuestionarios. En este artículo se presentan los resultados obtenidos tras el tercero. A partir de estos datos, el objetivo de este artículo es, por un lado, indagar sobre las posibles causas que motivaron la participación y la abstención de los jóvenes en las elecciones al PE. Por otro, se quiere hacer constar que la baja participación es un problema social que posee un transfondo educativo.

The turnout is low in elections in general and in the European Parliament elections in particular. This situation reflects the more widespread phenomenon of disenchantment with democracy and its institutions, which is particularly prevalent among young people. In view of this situation, in September 2008 we decided to research into university students’ participation in the elections to the European Parliament to be held in June 2009. The study was designed in three phases, in which different questionnaires were administered. This article presents the results obtained after the third questionnaire. On the basis of these data, the aim of this article is, on the one hand, to research into the possible reasons why young people decided to vote or abstain in the European Parliament elections. On the other hand, it also shows how low levels of participation are a social problem which ought to be seen against an educational background.
