Abstract

A decisive element to maintain the scientific development of a country is doctoral training, so it is vital to rely on quality programs that allow the acquisition of the necessary skills for a proper insertion into the labor market, which is increasingly broad for this educational level. The purpose of this work is to inquire about the quality of the training acquired by the students of the doctoral program at the University of Barcelona (UB), as well as the effects that the degree has on their integration into the labor market. A quantitative methodology was used, based on a questionnaire survey of 421 UB doctoral students who obtained their PhD between 2012 and 2016. The results indicate the existence of a heterogeneous profile, with differences in the competences acquired and satisfaction according to the area of knowledge, sex, and age and with a differential impact on the labor market only by areas of knowledge. Considering the diversity of profiles and the ways of being and carrying out the doctoral thesis, it is important to work on training and follow-up plans adjusted to the reality of the group. Working on this model will imply addressing issues of guidance, mentoring and involvement of the agents who intervene in the training period.
