The emergence of generative Artificial Intelligence, through tools such as ChatGPT, is reshaping virtual learning environments and educational frameworks at all levels. This issue of RIED offers a broad and critical perspective on the challenges, opportunities, and experiences associated with the use of these emerging technologies in higher education, with particular attention to ethics, teacher training, student perceptions, and sustainability. It addresses regulatory approaches, models of technology acceptance, enriched teaching strategies, and tools such as H5P, flipped classrooms, virtual reality, and educational chatbots. The 16 articles provide valuable insights for those aiming to integrate AI into mediated education in a critical, reliable, and innovative way.
