Abstract

Bullying and cyberbullying have already established as significant predictors of suicidal behavior. The aim of this systematic review is to examine longitudinal studies that analyze the effect of bullying or cyberbullying on the development of suicidal ideation or suicide attempts.  WoS and Scopus were searched and 24 articles were reviewed. Most of the reviewed studies conclude that experiences of bullying and cyberbullying involves a significantly increased risk of developing suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in the short, medium and long term (bullying and suicidal ideation: between OR=1. 70 and OR=6.48; cyberbullying and suicidal ideation: between OR=1.34 and OR=1.79; bullying and suicide attempts: between OR=1.31 and OR=6.48; cyberbullying and suicide attempts: between OR=1.34 and OR=1.79). After controlling for suicidal behaviors at baseline, being bullied implies up to a 3-times higher risk of developing suicidal ideation or committing a suicide attempt. In contrast, cyberbullied individuals do not have a significantly increased risk of suicide. Most studies assess suicidal behaviors by means of an ad hoc item, which may cause methodological problems. The results obtained call for greater prevention of suicide and bullying.
