Abstract

Academic and professional decision-making processes take on transcendental importance during adolescence. In these processes, there are multiple influential factors, among which the family stands out, which can act as a reinforcing resource or as a barrier hindering the decision. The aim of this study is to understand the families role in the academic and professional decision-making of youngsters, establishing a comparison between five European countries. To do so, a descriptive-comparative study was carried out based on a quantitative method using a designed questionnaire to collect information. The sample was formed by 283 parents, guardians or legal representatives from five European countries, selected through accessibility sampling. The results reveal similarities and differences regarding the role played by families in the academic and professional decision-making process of adolescents. The responsibility they take and the important role they play in the academic and professional guidance of their children are highlighted. In general, they consider their preparation to be adequate to undertake this task, despite the existence of factors that hinder their intervention, with the search for information being one of the tasks faced by most of families. Based on these results, it is clear that there is a need to propose intervention lines with families to achieve effective involvement in the decision-making process of their sons and daughters.
