Abstract

Socio-occupational guidance of unaccompanied foreign youth (UGY) and young migrants (YM) out of government care is essential, since the lack of employment can be a factor that ignites a process of exclusion. UGY and YM face periods of adaptation to the social, school and work contexts of the receiving country, which are often made difficult by the barriers in the regulation of their documents. This study was carried out in different welcome resources for YMN and in a youth protection center aimed at socio-occupational insertion, all located in Andalusia. A qualitative methodology was used to find out about the delivery of socio-occupational guidance aimed at this population, as well as users’ opinions and those of the professionals working with them. The research involved 78 adolescents and young people hosted in different parts of Andalusia, two directors and 24 socio-labor guidance practitioners. Data collection was carried out through interviews and focus groups. The results showed that there are effective socio-labor guidance initiatives in Andalusia, and that the labor market insertion of young migrants out of government care has notably improved with the modification of articles 197 and 198 of the regulations on foreigners (Organic Law 4/2000). In conclusion, the need to train guidance practitioners in technologies and innovative strategies to attract the attention of adolescents and young people was highlighted, as well as the need for the existence of a socio-occupational guidance worker in the youth protection centers.
