Abstract

This article features a research project on the impact perceived by secondary school students, teachers and guidance teams regarding the implementation of an educational project on mental health, focused specifically on suicide. The objective was to identify and assess the perceived difficulties and resistances, understanding the influence produced by the taboo surrounding this topic. The project was implemented in 16 Valencian high schools with a total of 1,367 participating students and 130 teachers. In the subsequent study, 8 counsellors, 9 teachers and 26 students participated, distributed in different courses. Several instruments were used to collect data, including a questionnaire to evaluate the perception of the difficulties encountered, as well as individual interviews and focus groups. The results reveal the insufficient training of teachers and counsellors in mental health issues. Furthermore, it was found that the project raised interest among the students and contributed to breaking the taboo for both tutors and students, fulfilling its prevention objective. Given the statistics on suicides and the results obtained, the need to continue with the implementation of mental health projects in educational institutions is suggested, as well as addressing this issue in teacher training.
