Abstract

ABSTRACT

In this research, we aim to figure out if there are meaningful differences between the students of Galician public and private centers who take part in the ESO Extraordinary Awards, which are announced every year by the Galician Ministry of Education. The condition to be able to take part in this competition is to have completed the 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), with an average mark equal or higher than 9.00 (A - Outstanding). We will hereby analyze the period of time that goes from 2008 to 2012, with a sample of 1212 students: 751 of which belong to public schools, and 461 do to private or public-private schools. This way we attempt to find out, analyze and evaluate how the kind of school centers existing in the four Galician provinces has an impact on the ESO students academic performance. To accomplish this, we establish 12 hypothesis referred to each subject that will be qualified in the exams, five of which mandatorily (Galician language, Spanish language, Foreign language, Mathematics and Social Sciences, Geography and History) and another one that will be chosen from different modalities (Physics and Chemistry, Biology and Geology, Latin, Music, Technology and Art Education). The tests results shall be considered in any analysis that measures the efficiency of school centers according to their ownership. To verify its compliance, we have used a mean-comparison procedure, the T-test.
