Abstract

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to get some insight, from the families with intellectually disabilities members, about the factors that underline the family quality of life. Likewise, it is interested in getting to know how these families consider their quality of life and the measures that could be taken in order to improve it. To reach this target, the model of quality of family life proposed by the Beach Center on Disability, at Kansas University, was taken as the starting point and five qualitative focus groups were conducted, four of them composed of fathers or mothers and the other one of siblings of persons with an intellectual disability. The results obtained describe how families perceive their situation concerning different dimensions integrated in family guidance towards quality of life (family interaction, daily family life, parenting and financial wellbeing) and the individual orientated ones (emotional wellbeing, health, environmental wellbeing, productivity and social wellbeing), according to the theoretical model we started with, as well as those strategies which have been useful to optimize it. This information helps to build a framework to assist guidance counselors and other professionals related to psychology intervention with people with intellectual disabilities and their families, to identify potential needs and develop a family-centered intervention directed to improve their quality of life.
