Abstract

Self-concept influences the different stages and events in young people's lives and more specifically at the university stage. Self-concept affects students' academic and work expectations and academic success. Likewise, the interaction of self-concept with an adequate guidance process can enrich cognitive, affective and social development, in addition to its possible repercussions on academic performance and work situation. The aim of the study is to analyze the relationship between self-concept and guidance needs in a sample of Spanish and Ecuadorian university students. The participants were 472 university students from Spain and Ecuador, of which 32% were men, with an average age of 23.12 (SD=4.99). The AF5 Self-Concept and the University Guidance Needs Questionnaire were used. The results show that there are significant differences regarding self-concept, specifically in the dimension of physical self-concept and in guidance needs between Spanish and Ecuadorian students. The results are discussed in relation to the importance of guidance and university policies related to the well-being of students, in addition to the cultural differences between both countries, as well as the differences in higher education systems.
