The Avoidant Personality Disorder is described as the most sensitive disorder to the failure of establishing relationships. Starting from the mental dimensions that compose it (metacognitive deficit, sense of not belonging, dysfunctional mental states) we try to propose a psychopathological model that goes beyond the description of the symptoms proposed in the DSM IV. We are also pointing out the possibility that there exist mechanisms that favour the maintenance of the disorder’s basic parts. In this way, the description of the most characteristic interpersonal dysfunctional cycles supplies elements of comprehension even of the relational difficulties that can occur when starting a psychotherapy with these individuals. Finally, we are proposing a circular model of the disorder which is useful to start specific strategies within the cognitive treatment of the Avoidant Personality Disorder
