Service-Learning and Development Cooperation at the University: A Transformative Project in a Two-Way Key

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Service-Learning (SL) as an educational and development cooperation strategy within the university context, highlighting its transformative potential through a bidirectional approach between Galicia and Cape Verde. The proposal is grounded in the recognition of SL as a methodology capable of linking academic training with civic engagement and social justice, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
A mixed-methods approach was adopted to examine representations, experiences, and challenges related to the application of SL in an international cooperation setting. The research process enabled the collection and triangulation of insights from faculty members, institutional leaders, and third-sector representatives regarding the educational, community-based, and ethical value of the projects developed.
Findings reveal that, despite structural and training limitations, there is a strong commitment among university faculty to this methodology. SL is perceived as a catalyst for meaningful learning, for strengthening university–community ties, and for fostering critical and global citizenship. The active involvement of students and the positive reception by local communities confirm SL’s potential as a tool for mutual development.
In sum, this work reaffirms SL as an effective means to promote horizontal and reciprocal relationships between territories, advancing a model of cooperation that not only transfers knowledge but also learns from others—building networks of shared solidarity and transformation between Galicia and Cape Verde.

Doctora en Ciencias de la Educación y del Comportamiento por la Universidad de Vigo, es profesora del Dpto. de Pedagogía y Didáctica de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Integrante del Grupo de Investigación ESCULCA (Grupo de Referencia Competitiva del Sistema Universitario de Galicia), ha participado en varios proyectos de investigación, tanto formando parte del equipo investigador como bajo el rol de investigadora principal. Se ha implicado en multiplicidad de publicaciones relevantes y ha sido premiada por incorporar la perspectiva de género en la docencia. Sus líneas de investigación se articulan en torno a la educación y el género

Cristina Varela-Portela, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela

Cristina Varela Portela es Doctora en Ciencias de la Educación por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, institución donde también ha obtenido anteriormente la Licenciatura en Pedagogía y el Diploma de Estudios Avanzados. En la actualidad es profesora del Dpto. de Pedagogía y Didáctica de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Sus líneas de investigación prioritarias son: educación y pedagogía intercultural, educación en contextos penitenciarios, aprendizaje-servicio, educación familiar y Diseño y Desarrollo Curricular. En el marco del grupo de investigación ESCULCA ha participado en diferentes proyectos de investigación, implicándose en un gran número de publicaciones científicas

Jesús García-Álvarez, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela

Profesor Contratado Doctor en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Pertenece al Grupo de Investigación ESCULCA-USC, a la Red de Investigación RIES y a la Red de Excelencia UNIASC. Ha colaborado activamente en diversos proyectos de investigación, lo que se traduce en una amplia producción científica. Ha participado en procesos de evaluación de la Agencia para la Calidad del Sistema Universitario de Galicia (ACSUG) y de la Agencia para la Calidad Científica y Universitaria de Andalucía (ACCUA). Actualmente, es asesor de la UNED en el Centro Penitenciario de Texeiro (A Coruña) y ocupa el cargo de Secretario de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la USC

Gabriela Míguez-Salina, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela

Graduada en Pedagogía por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Máster en estudios avanzados en antropología social y cultural por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y Doctora en Educación por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Profesora Ayudante Doctora en el área de Teoría e Historia de la Educación de la USC. Sus líneas de investigación se centran en temas de inclusión social de colectivos en riesgo de exclusión. Forma parte del Grupo de Investigación ESCULCA.
