Abstract

ABSTRACT

In this research we have studied the consequences for caregivers of a disability of a relative, focusing on the "burden", anxiety, and depression. For this research we have used two questionnaires: the Goldberg´s anxiety and depression scale and the caregiver burden questionnaire for dependents of Zarit. The study was carry out on 45 families belonging to five associations for families of handicapped relatives belonging to the city of Ceuta. With this we hope to collect information in this field where no research has been carried out to date. The results of the investigation show that two third of family members present a symptom of anxiety and/or depression, although most of the family members express that taking care of handicapped family members doesn´t represent a burden in their daily activities. After a deep analysis, we detected that main preoccupation of the families have to do with the economic and the uncertainty of the future. Besides, the gender, the age and the grade of handicap by themselves were not determining factors. In conclusion, looking after handicapped family members, although it is not considered a burden by family members, does have an effect over them, manifesting itself through an increase in symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is necessary to keep on researching into others variables such as the ethnicity or the extent of relationship to improve the life quality of the families.
