Forging Transnational Connections: The Role of the UNRA University and the Baltic University shaping Potwar Educational Landscapes

Resumen

Este artículo busca abordar una laguna en la historiografía de la educación superior de las personas desplazadas (PD) mediante el análisis de los esfuerzos de los migrantes forzados de los Estados Bálticos por reconstruir la educación superior en el exilio. Se centra en el establecimiento y la evolución de la Universidad UNRRA y la Universidad Báltica, dos importantes instituciones educativas creadas para PD en la Europa de posguerra. Mediante un análisis comparativo, el estudio subraya el papel de la educación en la formación de identidades transnacionales y aborda las complejidades de establecer espacios educativos para PD en el contexto de posguerra. Explora cómo los conceptos de transnacionalidad y transculturalidad se reflejaron en la UNRRA y las universidades bálticas a medida que las personas desplazadas buscaban implementar estas ideas aprovechando sus tradiciones educativas nacionales y abordando las diferencias culturales.
La Universidad UNRRA fue fundada en Múnich en 1945 por profesores y estudiantes, principalmente de países ocupados por la Unión Soviética, con el objetivo de fomentar la cooperación internacional y revitalizar el humanismo entre un alumnado diverso y multilingüe. A pesar del éxito inicial, el cambio de prioridades de los Aliados condujo a su disolución en 1947, lo que puso de manifiesto la fragilidad de las iniciativas educativas transnacionales en entornos políticamente conflictivos. La Universidad Báltica fue concebida por refugiados lituanos, letones y estonios que buscaban preservar sus identidades culturales y sus intereses académicos. Fundada en 1946, su objetivo era unir a las tres naciones bálticas en su búsqueda de una educación superior, a la vez que afrontaban los desafíos planteados por las tendencias nacionalistas y las presiones externas de las autoridades. Si bien la Universidad Báltica fomentó la colaboración, finalmente se enfrentó a la inestabilidad debido a intereses contrapuestos y a la evolución de las directivas administrativas.
