En este artículo se presenta la colección formada por José Lázaro Galdiano, bibliófilo y coleccionista de arte que cedió la totalidad de su patrimonio al estado español a su muerte, en 1947. Con este patrimonio se constituyó la Fundación que lleva su nombre. Se hace especial hincapié en la colección de objetos artísticos, un conjunto de más de trece mil piezas de excepcional calidad, infiriendo de su estudio cual era el gusto del coleccionista, su ideal de belleza y las razones que le indujeron a formar la colección. José Lázaro Galdiano es considerado como un coleccionista romántico, que reunió una importante colección de colecciones para su propio disfrute y formación. Tuvo, con ello, la intención explícita de contribuir a la educación de sus compatriotas, proteger el patrimonio artístico del país y cimentar la idea de regeneración nacional.
In this article the collection formed by Jose Lazaro Galdiano, booklover and collector of art that yielded the totality of his patrimony to Spain when he died, in 1947. With this patrimony the Foundation was constituted, taking his name. The collection of artistic objects is specially emphasized; more than thirteen thousand pieces of exceptional quality, inferring of this study which was the taste of the collector, his ideal of beauty and the reasons why he formed the collection. Jose Lazaro Galdiano is considered a romantic collector, who joined together an important collection of collections for his own benefit and formation. He had, with it, the explicit intention to contribute to the education of his compatriots, to protect the artistic patrimony of the country and to lay the foundations of the idea of a national regeneration.
