Resumen

Los educadores con sexualidades y géneros no normativos han existido durante mucho tiempo, pero se ha publicado sorprendentemente poca investigación histórica que explore sus experiencias durante la Era Progresista en los EE. UU. Esta fue una época en la que trabajar en las escuelas abrió nuevas posibilidades profesionales y personales para una gran población de mujeres en su mayoría solteras. Sin embargo, realizar dicha investigación presenta muchos desafíos, que incluyen 1.) dificultades para localizar documentación sobre aspectos de la vida de los educadores que eligieron no registrar, y 2) diferencias en el lenguaje que se puede haber usado en ese entonces versus ahora para describir a tales personas. En este artículo, describo algunos de estos desafíos que he encontrado mientras investigaba y escribía una biografía de Ella Flagg Young, superintendente escolar de Chicago entre 1909 y 1915.
