Las Meninas es un cuadro cargado de enigmas. En él concurren un complejo de referencias, contenidos literarios, usos del ritual de la época que hacen del cuadro un paradigma del imaginario del pintor. Concebida como obra maestra, para el entorno restringido del rey, Velázquez aparece pintando un cuadro oculto sobre el que se han formulado las más diversas hipótesis aunque es una referencia a obras maestras de la Antigüedad concretamente a la obra maestra de Apeles descrita por los escritores antiguos.
Las Meninas is a picture full of enigmas. It meets a complex number of references, literature contents, uses of the ritual of the time that make the picture a paradigm of the imagination of the painter. Conceived as masterpiece, puts together the restricted number of people around the king, Velazquez appears painting a hidden picture on which the diverse hypotheses have been formulated although it is a reference to masterpieces of the Antiquity, in particular, to the masterpiece of Apeles described by the old writers.
