This study analyzes the role played by the royal seal and the written document in the complex Spanish government during the sixteenth century. Its use as a power strategy by the various authorities that succeeded on the island and the problems that its use produced from the arrival of Christopher Columbus show the importance and the value given to the seal as a representative symbol of the jurisdiction of the monarch.
