The origin of the personal growth groups (PDG) is analyzed, which had its foundation in the ideas and intervention techniques of four main sources: the contributions of the work of the National Training Laboratory (NTL), of the humanistic psychology, of the "groups marathon ”and“ of the open meeting ”groups. Likewise, the characteristics of the PDG´s are exposed, which basically consist of carrying out a planned set of group activities, in a relaxed and safe environment, which include exercises and meetings in small groups that combine interpersonal communication, emotional experience and reflection. They basically have an experiential and non-academic character. The fact that the groups are carried out intensively and in an isolated environment facilitates the temporary distancing of personal and interpersonal problems, as well as the isolation from environmental influences that hinder concentration in analysis and reflection. PDG´s provide the opportunity to establish new personal relationships and the opportunity to analyze, with the help of the rest of the participants, the origin and circumstances of personal and relationship problems, which usually produces an increase and improvement in interpersonal relationships and intrapersonal consciousness.
