Towards a theoretically progressive integration of psychotherapy: a constructivist contribution

In view of the proliferation of literally hundreds of different schools of psychotherapy, it is not surprising that eclecticism is becoming the most popular orientation to psychotherapeutic practice. But the dominant approaches to integrating different models of therapy share certain limitations as a result of their implicit advocacy of a unificacionist ideal, which ignores fundamental theoretical incompatibilities between models. In this article, I provide a constructivist critique of unificationism, and instead argue for a more limited form of Theoretically Progressive Integrationism that attempts to preserve the conceptual coherence of an elaborated eclectic model.
