Gender and Peasant Women in the Historical Making of the Regional Dance Tourist Show: El Parado de Valldemossa in Mallorca (1905-1936)

The article analyses from a gender perspective the making and initial trajectory of the first regional dance group that appeared in Mallorca as a tourist show during the first third of the 20th century: El Parado de Valldemossa. It shows how the parallel processes of touristification and regionalisation of the popular peasant dance tradition led to its domestication. It understands the dance in question as an example of bodily performativity of the gender archetypes typical of Santiago Rusiñol’s tourist literature and of its regional counterpart, Tous Maroto. In this process, the old festive ritual of transgression in which the prevailing gender inequalities were compensated, was transformed into social discipline trying to impose the old nineteenth-century bourgeois model in a context in which it was being questioned throughout Europe. Finally, the article shows how the women of peasant extraction who danced in the folkloric group developed their own feminine agency, resisting through everyday practice to submit entirely to the new disciplines.
