Traditionally, research in psychotherapy has focused on typical and standardized patients according to some predetermined diagnosis. Although it is evident to clinicians that patients have unique cultural identities and experiences of illness and suffering, this has been less addressed in this field of study. However, in recent years, there has been an emphasis on the need for contextually relevant psychotherapy research with patients who have non-hegemonic identities. From these studies, culturally sensitive and competent knowledge and interventions have been developed for various populations, such as those with diverse sexual and gender identities. The purpose of this work is to provide an updated narrative review of mental health research and psychotherapy in the LGBT+ population developed in the Ibero-American context. We present the research lines that can be recognized in the region, organized into the dimensions of Determinants, Constituents, and Consequences of psychotherapy from the Generic Model of Psychotherapy developed by Orlinski and Howard. We conclude with a discussion of how these research lines collectively offer an understanding and proposal for addressing the specific challenges faced by the LGBT+ population in terms of mental health and psychotherapeutic intervention, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life and psychological well-being of these populations in Ibero-America.
