Abstract

This paper aims at outlining the main themes of attachment theory and research in their relationship with psychotherapy in general, avoiding as much as possible to link them at the theoretical principles and the practice of the prevailing models of psychotherapy (psychoanalytic, cognitive, and family therapy). Psychotherapeutic practice is considered with respect to: (1) the evolutionary foundations of attachment theory, (2) the dialectic between types and dimensions of attachement, (3) the relationships between attachment and cognition, personality development and organization stemming from the first attachments (with particular regard to attachment disorganization) and, (4) the regulation of emotion. Finally, the paper reflects on how psychotherapy informed by attachment theory stands in relation to the debate between modern and post-modern epistemologies.
