The resistance to change of cognitive structures is related to the piagetian process of assimilation, to the structural properties of the hierarchic organization of self-knowledge, and to the degree of cognitive psychotherapy. The meeting with a particularly resistant cognitive structures invites to a careful exploration: 1) of the origins of that structure within the patient’s developmental history; 2) the role played by that structure in maintaining the patient’s self-knowledge stable. The therapeutic change of any cognitive structure is conceived as a development of the old structure, rather than as passive substitution of the old structure with a totally a new one.
