Abstract

The conversion of the public office of chanciller y registrador mayor de Indias to a private property plus their fragmentation among several owners during the Habsburg Spain, resulted in the appearance of many interests among various family inheritance networks in the New Spain and Spain. Succession disputes hindered the incorporation of the public office to the Crown started by Carlos III. This essay is a brief summary of this historical process with some considerations about the nature of public office at the end of the Anciene regime.
