Reconsidering the chapel-school phenomenon from northern latitudes

The creation of chapel schools in Spain during the 20th century provided a low-cost response to the educational needs of the poorest sectors of the population. These initiatives created multifunctional spaces for the celebration of worship and the teaching of classes in generally humble buildings and discreet architectures, but which provided a dignified and ingenious solution to the demands to be covered. Perhaps the fact that the highest rates of illiteracy during the first two thirds of the century abounded in the south of the country concentrated these architectures in that territory, causing us to restrict them almost exclusively to that area. However, this phenomenon was not exclusive to these regions, so it is worth reconsidering this fact by analysing works from other latitudes, in order to adopt a broader and more objective view of this phenomenon, taking into account its particularities. We analyse here the chapel-schools of Pinilla (Zamora).
