Portuguese women writers, female authorship, convent literature, circumstantial poetry, eighteenth centuryAbstract
This paper aims at reporting the existence of 28 female-authored poems published between the fourth and sixth decades of the eighteenth century in Portugal. These include seven anonymous texts as well as one signed by Soror Tomásia Caetana de Santa Maria, a writer already known for her further works. The others were penned by thirteen different women --occasional poets who were, however, able to print their verses-- whose names are now recorded for the first time. Thus, the objective is to contribute to the progressive recovery of eighteenth century women’s part in the literary life of the Iberian Peninsula; in particular, that which took place around Portuguese convents, since most of these authors are connected with some nunnery.
