The Journey to Spain of Mlle Robert: A Canonical Journey of the French Bourgeoisie during the «Years of Hunger»

Based on a photo album documenting a 1949 journey by a group of French travelers to Spain, discovered at the Marché aux Puces in Paris, this study examines the touristic experiences of this bourgeois group in relation to Spain. The research pursues three main objectives. First, it analyzes the reality of the trip and the motivations of the tourists within the context of one of the most challenging periods in Spain’s recent history, further complicated by the intricate relations between the two countries at the time. Second, it investigates the album as a narrative artifact, exploring the perspectives of the photographers, the arrangement of images, the captions, and their connection to touristic practices, as well as the intermedial mechanisms that shaped a specific imaginary of Spain in France. Finally, it considers the personal album of Mlle Robert as a narrative project that illustrates how a typical French bourgeois journey to postwar Spain contributed to the reproduction and perpetuation of a subordinate relationship with the neighboring country.
