Abstract

Several authors stress the need for formal guidance in the learning of a subject, at least in its early stages. However, with the emergence of quality educational resources on the Internet, is it possible for students to acquire the background needed to learn autonomously through the network without going to the classroom? From the analysis of data obtained from a questionnaire that was administered to 14,936 students from Catalan universities, this article shows how, autonomous consultation of Internet resources in university courses does not replace the initial guidance of the educational institution. However, the data show that in the later stages these resources can be beneficial in acquiring expert knowledge, assuming the process of autonomous and networked lifelong learning.
