Effects of the Psychomotor Therapy Program at home, focused on the elderly person with dementia and their family caregiver

Dementia affects millions of people around the world. Systematic reviews have shown benefits of psychosocial therapies for people with dementia and their carers. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the effects of a Psychomotor Therapy Program at home, aimed at the dyad person with dementia and their family caregiver, on the burden of care and the quality of life of the dyad. As secondary objectives, it is proposed to evaluate the impact on the cognitive, functional performance, and the psycho-behavioral symptoms of the person with dementia. A clinical trial was performed. 22 dyads that are routinely assisted in the Geriatrics Department of the Hospital de Clínicas were recruited, of which 8 losses and 14 dyads that completed the complete cycle were recorded for statistical analysis. In relation to the proposed objectives, the Friedman test was applied to evaluate the difference in the scores of the scales. With the exception of the Barthel scale, the other scales show significant differences in the scores in the different assessment phases. The significant differences in the phases for the areas of quality of life, caregiver burden, psycho-behavioral symptoms, and cognitive performance indicate the importance of implementing an aproach that aims to enhance intra-family care capacities and stimulation of the autonomy of the elderly with dementia.
