This paper overviews from a critical point of view the several attempts that have been carried out in the field of research on psychotherapeutic effectiveness. The unexpected and disconcerting results of these studies make necessary to restate the philosophy of research in psychotherapy and to focus on the difficulty of designing models capable of gathering the whole complexity of the psychotherapeutical process.
