Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1955) and the configuration of Olmec aesthetics

It has only been about one hundred and fifty years ago since the so-called Olmec culture came to light. Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias occupies a prominent place in the development of the definition of the artistic style of the Olmec culture. In this article we perform a detailed analysis of his work, trying to show the evolution of his artistic ideas and the importance that they had in the configuration of what is now called the «Olmec aesthetics». We also analyse his theoretical assumptions and the enormous influence that his theses have, even today, on the study of what is widely considered as the «mother culture» of Mesoamerica.
