Abstract

This article aims to evaluate the influence of epic poetry produced in Italy, namely Ludovico Ariosto’s and Torquato Tasso’s poems, on Portuguese female epic poetry. In this sense, it intends to demonstrate how Sister Maria de Mesquita Pimentel’s epic-biblical poems by, that is the Memorial da Infância de Cristo (1639), the Memorial dos Milagres de Cristo (edited in 2014) and the Memorial da Paixão de Cristo (unpublished), reflect and dialogue with Orlando Furioso and Gerusalemme Liberata. It is concluded that Sister Mesquita Pimentel poems establish intertextual relations with these Italian ones demonstrating Portugal’s reception of Ariosto and Tasso was very fruitful, to the point of being known inside the walls of female convents.
