Abstract

For Carmen Conde, claiming authorship requires a complex balancing act. Depending on the context—whether the specific text in which authorship is performed, the discursive genre, the medium, or the reception environment—she alternates between emphasizing her identity as a woman and implicitly positioning herself as a "man of authentic creative being," thereby erasing gender markers. She highlights the artisanal and professional aspects of her craft while also invoking a spontaneous authenticity that transcends formal training or acquired technique. At times, she underscores the materiality of writing; at others, she asserts the divine superiority of the artist, detached from all constraints. She may appeal to an original interiority free from external influence or proclaim the heteronomy of her voice. To understand these seemingly contradictory negotiations, it is essential to examine the intersections of gender, writing, and craft within a framework where authorship presupposes a sovereign and singular interiority traditionally denied to working women.
