La Rioja Alta had a series of small wetlands, some of which were drained in the 1950s to be used for agricultural purposes, particularly for cereals. Such was the case of the Madrileña lake (in the town of San Asensio), and the other, perhaps pompously called the ‘Herramélluri lake’, although its size does not fall into the category of what is hydrographically a lake. The Herramélluri lake was recovered in 2006.
