First, the antecedents of group psychotherapy are described, referring to the moment and circumstances of the discovery of group therapy as a therapeutic modality, as well as the beginning of the development of group concepts and techniques. Second, the beginnings of group psychodynamic psychotherapy are exposed, which was based essentially on the application of some psychoanalytic concepts to the group context. It also examines the contribution to this psychotherapeutic field of the concept of "group as a whole" and its influence on clinical practice. Next, the period of expansion of group psychotherapy is described, which involves the development of multiple and very diverse modalities of group psychotherapy and their application to very different environments and problems. Finally, the characteristics of integrative group therapy are exposed, which is characterized by the accumulation and integration of the various contributions, theoretical and technical, to this modality of psychotherapy that have been carried out over time from its inception to the present.
