Abstract

The article starts by comparing the emptiness induced by dependency in emotional couple’s relationships with withdrawal symptoms, characteristic of addictions to substances. This comparison is developed through the article with the analysis of several cases, with first person testimonies and with metaphors drawn from literary accounts. The process of recovery from dependency relationships is compared to the process of mourning, initiated by anger and grief caused by loss and ending in acceptance after a long inner journey into the essence of autonomy.
