Abstract

The object of this article is to explore, within the framework of the integrationist movement in psychotherapy, the status of guided imagery within various present-day models in psychotherapy. While acknowledging the great diversity in the method of application of imagery, a common element in its use by the various schools of psychotherapy is the belief in the therapeutic effectiveness of mental visualizations. The current reevaluation of the therapeutics benefits of imagery has been possible only after overcoming Cartesian dualistic notions and Watsonian prejudice against therapeutic visualizations. At the end of the article two examples are described of "change events" that call for the application of guided imagery.
