Abstract

Over the last few years, several critical voices have been about the number of university students and universities in Spain. Opinions have focused on two issues: the number of universities and university students in Spain is very high and, on the other hand, they focus on the question of whether the current Spanish youth is the best prepared in history. In this paper, we have focused on the period between 1971 and 2021. A total of 50 years, Spain has undergone a profound economic, social and political transformation. On the other hand, we have also included a comparison with the data in two countries: Germany, a country that is a reference in the European economy, which also underwent a very relevant transformation process with the incorporation of the German Democratic Republic and, on the other hand, Portugal, a country of our environment and
similar culture that, like Spain, is transformed from a backward dictatorship to an advanced democracy.
