Abstract

In this paper, we present the background and conceptual elements that support the Health Promoting Universities (HPU) initiative, as well as the basic guidelines that have been proposed for their formation. We also analyze the status of the University of Sonora (Unison) as a HPU, as it is in the process of developing an institutional project according to the criteria of this initiative. The Unison has resources for students and workers health care, but its institutional organization does not include Health Promotion among its priorities. When interviewed, teachers from this institution stated that they do not consider that the promotion of workers’ health is a priority for the University. In the PDI 2017-2021 proposal, some elements have been incorporated that may result in an advance for the construction of the institution as a HPU.
