The use of the smartphone is fully widespread in adolescents. Numerous studies warn of health risks such as nomophobia. The aim of this study was to explore the relations between self-esteem, emotional regulation, as well as some family and academic factors in smartphone use. They participated 150 Galician students between 12 and 18 years of age (M =14.54; SD = 1.46) and 61.3% of parents (N =92) participated. Parents answered a single demographic and mobile questionnaire about their children. The students completed four questionnaires: Smartphone Uses, Self-Esteem, Emotional Regulation and the EDAS (Smartphone Dependency and Addiction Scale). With the results of this scale, participants were classified into three groups: Dependent, non-dependent and addiction (nomophobia) to execute a logistic regression. The results revealed that self-esteem (Exp (ß) = 0.75), physical symptoms (Exp (ß) = 0.27), spending on applications (Exp (ß) = 3.12) and night-time mobile use (Exp (ß) = 4.10) predict the possible development of nomophobia. These results suggest the need to promote self-esteem through intervention programs, as well as healthy habits (i.e. sleep) that contribute to the prevention of the nomophobia.
