Abstract

Based on the investigation of fifty unpublished letters that the Spanish psychiatrist exiled in Argentina Fernanda Monasterio (1920-2006) writes to Rosa Chacel (1898-1994), this paper will explore Chacel's position, prestige, and influence in relation to the network of contacts during her exile. Likewise, the paper will examine the relations between women's social spaces in Spain and how these may possibly be transposed to their destinations abroad. Specifically, this case study will focus on the role in the reconfiguration of the preexisting network which in her case clearly illustrates the importance of such networks for the integration and professional development of exiled women intellectuals. We are also interested in highlighting the ethical dimension of the epistolary gesture as an action in which the care of the other is assumed.
