This essay studies the theme of the abandoned garden in Spanish literature and art at the turn of the xix century and the firsts decades of the xxth. This subject served as a form of expression for several aesthetic premises of modernismo, at the same time, it also conveyed the ideas of decadence and degeneration that were so in vogue during that period, propagated by books like Max Nordau's Decadence.
