En este artículo se pretende mostrar un panorama de las condiciones sociales y económicas en las que trabajan los artistas, singularmente los pintores a principios del siglo xx en nuestro país. El considerable retraso de España en todos los órdenes se muestra muy especialmente en la labor de los intelectuales en general y específicamente en los artistas plásticos. Y esta dificultad procede de dos vertientes concretas. Una el atraso del país en la incorporación de libertades e ideas progresistas, lo que conduce a la censura, la incomprensión y el recfiazo a todo lo novedoso y otra las dificultades económicas para poder vivir sólo del trabajo artístico. No hay galerías, no fiay marcfiantes, el pueblo inculto, analfabeto no entiende de arte, la burguesía se decanta por el arte tradicional, clasicista.
In this article it's pretended to sfiow a panorama of social and economical condltions in vi/tiich artists work, singularly tfie painters at tíie beginning of ttie twentietfi century in our country. The considerable delay of Spain in all orders is sfiown specially in the labour of tfie Intellectuals in general and specially in plastic artists. And tfiis difficulty comes from two concrete sides: one of tfiis, tfie backwardness of the country in the incorporation of liberties and progressive ideas, which involves censorship, incomprehension and rejection to newness, and another, the economical difficulties to be able to Uve just on the artistic work. There's no galleries, no merchants, the uneducated and illiterate people are ignorant of Art, bourgeoisie is decanted to traditional art.
