Abstract

Valentín Carderera y Solano has been one of the most engaging personality in Spain during the xix century. Unfortunately though, he didn’t receive that critical success he actually deserved. In the light of unpublished documents recently found in the archives of his heirs, our aim is to fill up as much as possible the lack of information of his sojourn in Italy (1822–1831), which was a fundamental period for his growth as artist, art historian and collector. In addition to our attempt to retrace the mentioned 9 year period, we are also publishing a list of portraits that Carderera states to have been executed in Rome, London, Paris and Madrid. This document from now on will be of a key importance to study his legacy and especially to classify his portraits.
