METAFÍSICA Y COMPROMISO. EL HORROR CÓSMICO EN LA OBRA NARRATIVA DE EMILIO BUESO Y GUILLEM LÓPEZ

METHAPHYSICS AND COMMITMENT. COSMIC HORROR IN EMILIO BUESO’S AND GUILLEM LÓPEZ’S NARRATIVE FICTION

Resumen

El término horror cósmico sugiere, en sí mismo, un cruce entre dos especies ficcionales que parecerían repelerse: el terror fantástico y la ciencia ficción. Definido en la literatura de H. P. Lovecraft, en textos como “The Call of Cthulhu” o At the Mountains of Madness, la progenie de tal subgénero ha sido amplia y diversa, repartiéndose entre los más diversos medios y atendiendo a todo tipo de principios ideológicos. Se repiten en esta producción dos aspectos o motivos temático-filosóficos interrelacionados: la acechanza de unas entidades de más allá del espacio-tiempo, suerte de deidades o seres extraterrestres impenetrables al intelecto, y la insignificancia del ser humano en un universo insondable e incognoscible. Dependiendo de la obra, la balanza se inclina a uno u otro lado. En ambos late, en cualquier caso, el mismo sentimiento de turbación metafísica o nihilismo existencial. En la narrativa en lengua castellana, son ya muchos los que han contribuido a este paradigma creativo, a menudo aportando visiones originales, que cuestionan el referente de partida. El artículo atiende a la forma que adopta en la creación de dos narradores españoles actuales, punta de lanza de la ficción de género en nuestro país: Emilio Bueso y Guillem López, en sus novelas Extraños eones (2014) y Lago negro de tus ojos (2019). Como veremos, cada uno ahorma el modelo lovecraftiano a sus estilos y obsesiones propios y distintivos, aunando inquietudes personales y sociales.

Abstract: The term cosmic horror suggests a cross between two fictional species that seem to repel each other: fantastic horror and science fiction. Defined in the literature of H. P. Lovecraft, in texts such as “The Call of Cthulhu” or At the Mountains of Madness, the progeny of this subgenre has been wide and diverse, distributed among the most diverse media and based on all sorts of ideological principles. Two interrelated thematic-philosophical aspects or motifs appear constantly in this production: the stalking of entities from beyond space-time, sorts of deities or extraterrestrial beings impenetrable to the intellect and the insignificance of the mankind in an unfathomable and unknowable universe. Depending on the work, the balance tips to one side or the other. In both cases, there is the same feeling of metaphysical disturbance or existential nihilism. In Spanish-language fiction, there are already many authors who have contributed to this creative paradigm, often providing original visions that question the starting point of reference. This article focuses on the form adopted in the creation of two current Spanish narrators, spearheads of genre fiction in our country: Emilio Bueso and Guillem López, in their novels Extraños eones (2014) and Lago negro de tus ojos (2019). As we will see, each one adapts the Lovecraftian model to their own distinctive styles and obsessions, bringing together personal and social concerns.
