PEER REVIEW PROCESS
Requirements and Evaluation Criteria of the Scientific Committee and External Reviewers of RIED
After a prior assessment by the Editor and before publication, manuscripts submitted to RIED will undergo a Preliminary Evaluation focused on the required formal aspects. Once this evaluation is successfully passed, articles will be subject to a Scientific Evaluation in which they will be anonymously evaluated by at least two members of the Scientific Committee or External Reviewers (peer-review), following the double-blind system. They will provide suggestions for revision and improvement, if necessary, in order to create a new version. Both positive evaluations are required for definitive publication. In the event that both evaluators do not provide a positive evaluation, a third evaluation will be required to determine acceptance, modification, or rejection for publication.
A. Requirements. Every submission must meet the following requirements:
- To have as a central object of study the field of specialization of RIED, which is education, mediated, open and distance teaching and learning.
- To comply FULLY with the Ethical code for authors.
- To comply with ALL Author guidelines.
- To be scientifically grounded and have internal unity.
- To be a contribution to the deepening of the diverse dimensions and areas of open and distance education or ICT applied to education.
- Priority will be given to works subject to the IMRAD model (Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion) that can have an impact on higher education.
B. Criteria for Evaluation by the Scientific Committee and External Evaluators.
The evaluation of each article toward the decision of acceptance / modification / rejection is based on the following criteria:
- The general interest of the field of study pertains to the domain of digital, open, and distance education, with a primary focus on possible implications for higher education. Works of limited general interest will have little scope in the Revista Iberoamericana de Educación a Distancia (RIED). Initially, specific works that pertain to very particular case studies will not be considered, nor will those that focus on a single course/subject, those that are limited to a single academic period, those that use a small population or sample, among others.
- Currentness, novelty, and originality. Articles that repeat already researched topics and yield similar results to those already achieved will be dismissed.
- Relevance and valuable information of the contributions.
- Applicability of the results in problem-solving.
- Advancement of scientific knowledge, not repetition, and predictable impact that generates interest and citations from other researchers.
- Reliability and scientific validity: solid theoretical foundation and proven methodological quality.
- Correct structure, writing, and presentation style of the material.
- Adequately cited and referenced bibliography is essential in ensuring the foundation, authority, and scientific rigor of a research article. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, the article will be initially disregarded if the citations and references are not relevant to the topic, sufficient (requiring no fewer than 25 references), impactful (from high-impact journals), diverse (international), and current (at least 40% from the last 4 years, including the current one).
- While RIED welcomes works related to distance and digital education, those focused on university education will be given priority.
- It is highly recommended to consult the full text for assistance in the final evaluation.
And always, the Reviewers must follow the guidelines that are indicated in the two Forms, the Preliminary Assessment and the Scientific Evaluation that they have to complete.
IN ADDITION, THE AUTHOR/S, before submitting an original article to RIED, shall undertake to accept and mark ALL and each of the elements appearing in the AUTHOR GUIDELINES and especially the "Presubmission Checklist" which are at the end of these guidelines.
OPEN ACCESS POLICY
The access to the electronic journal is free. This is intended both to increase access and promote scientific interaction.
PRESERVATION POLICY

CODE OF ETHICS ON PUBLICATION AND MISCONDUCT
The RIED-Revista Iberoamericana de Educación a Distancia acknowledges and declares its compliance with the Committee on Publication Ethics: COPE's Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors, which includes ethical standards and guidelines for publishing and preventing misconduct.
As a result of this adherence, we outline below the fundamental ethical principles that all parties involved in the publication of this scientific journal commit to respecting and enforcing.
1. Author Responsibilities. Code of Ethics
The works submitted by the authors must fully adhere to the rules established by RIED for this purpose.
Any article submitted to RIED may be rejected at any stage of the editorial process, and even if it were already published in the electronic format of the journal, if fraud, misconduct, or lack of ethics is detected by the Editorial Team. Therefore, our code of ethics and best practices for scientific publication require authors to commit to the following essential ethical declaration regarding the work submitted to RIED:
- The article is original and has not been published, either in its entirety or in part, in any medium. Furthermore, it does not contain any material taken from other authors or previously published works by the same authors. Any form of plagiarism or self-plagiarism, whether total or partial, will result in severe sanctions, including the exclusion of the article.
- The research data presented in the article is unpublished, truthful, verifiable, and has not been altered at any point during the process.
- The authors take full responsibility for all content presented in the article.
- The manuscript has not been simultaneously submitted to any other scientific publication while it is being evaluated and edited by RIED. Additionally, the same data has not been used in any other previously published work.
- The manuscript is signed by all (it is recommended not to exceed 4) and only those authors who have made a real and significant scientific and intellectual contribution. Furthermore, the order of their names appears according to their responsibility and involvement in the work.
- At no point or stage of the research have data, tables, figures, images, or graphics been falsified or manipulated by modifying, adding, or excluding content.
- The weaknesses or limitations of the research are explicitly stated in the work.
- There are no conflicts of interest that may have influenced the interpretations or results obtained.
- All sources, works, and/or texts used by other authors are properly cited and referenced according to the RIED guidelines.
- The use of artificial intelligence tools is permitted, provided that the type of AI used, the parts of the work it was applied to, and its purpose are clearly specified. This must be indicated in the methodology section or relevant part of the paper. The use of AI does not exempt authors from full responsibility for the content, nor should it affect the authenticity or scientific integrity of the work.
- If the article includes non-original images, the necessary permissions must be obtained, and the sources must be indicated.
- The authors are committed to notifying RIED of any errors or inaccuracies detected in the publication and cooperating in the retraction or correction of such errors.
- If the research involved human participants, the process followed to obtain their consent to participate must be explicitly stated, as well as the measures taken to protect their privacy and data.
- Inclusive language has been used, provided that it does not compromise grammatical correctness.
- If deemed necessary by the editorial team, the authors will make all sources or data on which the research is based available to the journal. It is at the discretion of the journal whether to make this information accessible or not.
-
If the research was funded by any agency, project, organization, or institution, this must be indicated at the end of the work. Similarly, if any type of authorization was required to carry out the research, it should also be noted.
The RIED employs fraud detection software to verify compliance with these commitments.
Any violation of the terms of this ethical statement will result in the article's exclusion, even if it has already been published. In this extreme case, an appropriate explanation of the exclusion would be provided in the space previously occupied by the article on the website.
2. Reviewer's commitments
External reviewers assigned to evaluate an article, following the relevant revisions, by means of the double-blind procedure, assist in forming the Editors' opinion regarding their decision-making or, as the case may be, provide guidance to authors for the improvement of their submitted article to the journal. Once reviewers accept the task of reviewing an article, they assume the following commitments:
- Any article submitted to RIED must be treated with absolute ethics and confidentiality throughout the editorial process. Only the Editors and the assigned reviewers may express their opinion on it. They will not share or discuss it with any unrelated persons.
- The content of each article should never be used for personal intentions.
- Assigned articles will be evaluated honestly, objectively, critically, impartially, constructively, and reasonably with respect to the different sections of the RIED review protocol.
- Reviewers will refrain from issuing personal assessments or judgments.
- Reviewers, upon accepting the evaluation, commit to carrying out the work as soon as possible, always respecting the maximum deadline granted by the Editors.
- Reviewers will not accept to evaluate an article if they suspect possible conflicts of interest.
3. Functions of the Director/Editor and the Editorial Team of RIED
3.1. On the decision to publish an article
The Director/Editor of RIED holds the ultimate responsibility for deciding which articles received by the journal should be published and which should not. This decision should be based exclusively on the suitability of the articles to the objectives of RIED, their scientific quality, and the opinion of scientific peer reviewers. It should always be guided by the editorial policy of the publication, as well as the ethical and editorial standards provided on the journal's website for authors, reviewers, and editors. In addition, attention should be paid to possible offenses relating to defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The Director/Editor of RIED will make the corresponding decisions following the relevant assessments of the respective external reviewers.
All members of the Editorial Team of RIED are committed to not use, without the express authorization of the author(s), the information generated by the manuscripts submitted to the journal. If there are reasonable complaints from any author regarding this point, justified responses should be provided to address any concerns raised.
3.2. Editorial Team Confidentiality
All members of the Editorial Team of RIED are committed to not disclose any information about any article submitted to the journal, outside of the members of the Editorial Team and external reviewers.
4. Disclosure and conflicts of interes
It is reiterated that in the case that the work submitted to RIED has been subject to external funding or may have produced any conflicts of interest that could have influenced the research results, it must be duly disclosed and clarified.
In order to reduce endogamy and potential conflicts of interest, efforts will be made to limit the publication of articles from authors belonging to the university that hosts the electronic edition of our journal RIED.

JOURNAL HISTORY
The RIED-Revista Iberoamericana de Educación a Distancia is the instrument of AIESAD for the dissemination of advances in research in the areas of open and distance teaching/learning in its different modalities. REID in its current format was born in 1998, succeeding the previous Ibero-American Journal of Distance Higher Education, born in 1988. On behalf of the Latinamerican Association for Higher Distance Education (AIESAD), Prof. Lorenzo Garcia Aretio created RIED and was its first Director. At the beginning it was published at Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Spain, which was the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of AIESAD. In 2000, the editorial control of the journal passed to depend directly upon the Vice-Chancellorship of International Relations at UNED. At the end of 2005, RIED, both in printed and electronic versions, was undertaken by the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), Ecuador, and the direction of the journal bécame the responsability of UNED.
Since 2006, RIED has been presented in printed and electronic formats, which contain identical contents in each issue. Currently all the issues of RIED have been digitized, since 1988, so that the journal is available in a more flexible way. A subscription can be obtained for the journal in its printed version. The journal in its electronic format is currently open to the entire community of researchers and academics from: https://revistas.uned.es/index.php/ried
RIED publishes two issues per year that can be configured as special issue or as miscellaneous. Each special issue is coordinated by one or more expert researchers on the subject in charge.
