The concept “mindfulness” has recently emerged in the English-speaking world and refers to a specific state of consciousness promoted by eastern meditative techniques. In this paper, we review the main theoretical conceptualizations of mindfulness in the field of psychotherapy regarding its components, assessment instruments and functioning. We also summarize the main characteristics of five psychotherapeutic approaches that incorporate mindfulness: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Compromise Therapy and Brief Relational Therapy. Finally, the clinical applications of these approaches are briefly discussed.
