Abstract

Cognitive change is a common goal in all cognitive therapies. It is not clear, nevertheless, if this change affects only the contents or the cognitive processes as well. Most cognitive therapy techniques focus their attention on the change of contents (e. g. irrational believes), as such therapies have not arisen from information processing theory, but from behaviour modification models or from psychoanalysis. This paper examines these circumstances and proposes a revision of the cognitive change on the basis of a general model of information theory and on the analysis of different stages of epistemological development.
