The broken windows theory was formulated at the beginning of the eighties by two criminologists (James Q. Wilson and George Kelling), although it became popular in the following decade, and since then, it has been applied in many disciplines. The theory can be summarized in that if a problem is not solved at the beginning (when it can be considered small), it tends to snowball and contaminate everything around it.
Based on this theory, the authors of this paper want to reflect on the relationship between it and certain aspects of current mathematics teaching at all educational levels, with special attention to university teaching.
